Hemp Extract Oil vs. Hemp Seed Oil: Is There a Difference?

Our mission remains the same – to help enrich the lives of others suffering from health conditions that wish to pursue a more natural holistic approach to care especially when traditional treatment regiments have failed. We will have a store that provides products with the highest industry standards of purity and quality that are tried and true. A 2016 study published in the Journal of Regulatory Science tested 23 products with "hemp oil and/or cannabinoid label claims" purchased on the Internet. Of these, 18 tested positive for the presence of at least one cannabinoid compound.

But three contained less than 0.01 percent of a cannabinoid, and four products labeled as CBD "were found not to contain any CBD”. As a medical professional, I felt uneasy about ordering certain products online because you just couldn’t be sure of what type of product you would receive. More importantly, I have been put in the shoes of the patients desperate to find a treatment for a loved one. As a result, I developed a passion and personal mission to help in the grassroots efforts to help educate people and medical professionals on how to select high quality CBD oil to people in a safe and legal way.

There are a growing number of companies buying products from mass distribution and reselling products. Some companies are also providing private sellers with bulk supplies of oils and other products that end up being divided and packaged by the private payer. While all completely legal, this can lead to the large growing problems that are being evaluated by the FDA as well as consumers. When doing my field research before considering opening a retail store, I was amazed about the number of retailers that sold products without being completely knowledgeable about the products, current research and potential interactions that can be seen with prescription medications. In addition, the retailers are trusting that the source of the oils are what the manufacturers say. They are sometimes provided with a certificate of authenticity and sometimes not. These reports can sometimes be obtained from a non-accredited lab that is not independent from the extraction facility or farm.

Without knowing what to look for when it comes to purchasing hemp oil as a retailer or customer, you can be left with products with inconsistent amounts of CBD and sometimes no CBD at all. This article will help you navigate the murky waters of how to select high quality hemp containing products.

Pitfall of mislabeled hemp oil, hemp seed oil, and CBD hemp extract oil

If you search for best CBD oil on Google, you will find several different articles proclaiming the top 10 CBD oil products for pain, anxiety and everything else. I have had several patients ask me to look at their company and render my opinion as to the quality of the oil. I have even had patients buy hemp oil that contained no CBD and wondered why it was ineffective. While it may seem like you’ve found what you’re looking for, it’s can sometimes not be what you ordered. Some companies deceptively trick consumers into believing that the products contain is a full spectrum product full of cannabinoids (CBD) and terpenes only to be a CBD isolate that has been stripped of some of the beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes.

In December of 2018, the industrial hemp plant was separated from the cannabis plant and is no longer considered a schedule 1 drug on the DEA’s classification schedule. This will allow much needed research to be performed to confirm some of the anecdotal medicinal benefits of the plant that millions of people experience. The USDA and the FDA will hopefully provide some much needed industry standards for cultivation, extraction and product labeling. It is important that the products on the market are tested from potency, toxins and heavy metals. At Pure Therapy, all products are third party tested at a ISO accredited laboratory independently of the Certificate of Analysis performed at the extraction facility.

Not every dose person requires the same dosage of CBD and usually requires a bit of trial and error to reach an effective dosage. There is no documented overdose of CBD per se but you can experience headaches, diarrhea and change in appetite if you consume too much. The new CBD extract drug, Epidiolex can cause an elevation in liver enzymes which leads me to believe that this may also be the case with CBD oil when taken in large amounts. I do believe that it is very important for anyone introducing a new product to this treatment regimen should consult their regular physician.

Accurate labeling is important to the industry. This will allow the consumer to understand what they’re consuming and enable companies to avoid any adverse reaction that could potentially become hurtful to the consumer.

What is the difference between hemp seed oil, hemp oil, and CBD hemp extract oil?

Until the CBD market experiences more oversight, mislabeled products will continue to flood the market. However, consumers should know how to differentiate between CBD hemp oil, hemp extract and hemp seed oil, so that they purchase the best products for their health.

There are countless definitions on the internet that define these plant and seed extracts.

Here are two simplistic ways to view hemp extract oil and hemp seed oil:

Hemp extract oil is produced mainly from the hemp flower, but the whole plant can help produce phytocannabinoids (CBD) that have numerous medicinal and phytonutrients.Hemp seed oil is produced from the seeds of hemp itself. It contains various nutrients, such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, making it great for digestion.

The number of cannabinoids in hemp seed oil (i.e., hemp oil) and CBD hemp extract oil is also a key differentiator. Hemp seed oil does not contain cannabinoids or terpenes. They are rich in amino acids and other nutrients that may aide in digestion and regulate cholesterol and sugar levels.

CBD oil extracted from industrial hemp contains numerous benefits depending on the type of product that you consume. Full-spectrum hemp extracts contain many phytocannabinoids such as CBD, CBG, CBC, terpenes and trace amounts of THC. Full spectrum oil provides you with the most beneficial effects from a whole plant extract. The plant is in its closest to natural form and has more medicinal benefit some of the other forms such as broad spectrum or CBD isolate. Broad spectrum hemp extract contains most of the cannabinoids and terpenes but removes the trace amounts of THC. It is a better a safer alternative for people who may be drug tested. CBD isolate is for patients that have sensitivities to some of the phytonutrients in the whole plant extract but still want the beneficial effects from CBD.

Now that we understand the difference between the two, here are some helpful hints to allow you to determine what exactly you are purchasing:

Analyze the certificate of authenticity (COA) for the products you are considering to make sure that the products have been third party tested by a laboratory independent of the manufacturer.

Look up the laboratory on the COA to ensure that they carry a ISO accreditation.Consider the cost of the product.

If the price of the products are too good to be true then it probably is. Cultivation, Extraction, testing and creating quality Hemp oil is is very expensive and labor intensive. Therefore, quality oils will be worth its weight in gold. Until the industry gets more standardization, it is up to consumers to read product labels vet their retailers. With the growing amount of mislabeling, it's easy to purchase the wrong product— but with knowledge and attention to detail, consumers can increase their chances of purchasing the appropriate product for their health.
